Apple is reportedly working on an exciting new flagship iPhone that promises to revolutionize smartphone design with a completely bezel-free display. The company initially aimed to launch this cutting-edge device by 2026, but recent reports suggest that its debut could be delayed due to technical challenges. If successful, this new iPhone could mark a major leap forward in how we experience smartphones, taking the idea of a seamless screen to new heights.
Apple, like many other smartphone manufacturers, has been focused on creating phones with slimmer bezels, as the trend for edge-to-edge displays continues to take over the industry. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro already feature thinner bezels than previous models, but Apple’s vision for a truly bezel-free phone takes it a step further by completely removing these borders. The result would be a stunning full-screen experience that immerses users in their content like never before.

However, to achieve this goal, Apple faces some significant technical hurdles. One of the biggest challenges is dealing with the current OLED bezel circuits, which would need to be folded under the display to create a bezel-less design. There’s also the issue of finding room for crucial components like the antenna, while ensuring that there’s no interference with the screen’s performance.
Another obstacle lies in integrating an under-display camera system. Unlike today’s smartphones, which place the front-facing camera in a notch or a hole-punch, a bezel-free iPhone would need to hide the camera beneath the screen. While this design change would enhance the phone’s aesthetics, it could also impact the quality of photos and video calls, as the technology for such cameras is still evolving.
Apple is working closely with its long-time partners, Samsung Display and LG Display, to bring this innovative design to life. Key to the success of a bezel-free display is the development of thin film encapsulation (TFE) technology, which would protect the OLEDs from moisture and oxygen. Additionally, an optical clear adhesive (OCA) process must be perfected to bond the screen with a transparent adhesive film. Unfortunately, progress on this front has been slower than expected.
Given these technical challenges, reports suggest that the 2026 timeline for a bezel-free iPhone may no longer be feasible. If Apple can overcome these hurdles, the first bezel-free iPhone could arrive as late as 2028, potentially with the iPhone 18 or iPhone 19 models.
While the idea of a bezel-free iPhone is certainly thrilling, it’s clear that Apple’s path to this next-generation design is going to take time. The integration of advanced display technologies and under-display components is a complex process, and it’s likely that the true full-screen iPhone will take longer to arrive than initially anticipated. Nevertheless, Apple’s continued work on this project suggests that the future of smartphones could look much more immersive than we ever imagined.
