Aurora police fatally shoot man while responding to a fight in a parking lot

Aurora police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man by officers responding to a fight in a parking lot Thursday afternoon.

The fight, which took place in a parking lot in the 11900 block of East 16th Avenue, involved a man “armed with an assault-style long gun,” according to an Aurora police post on X. Police said on X that the man struck by gunfire was taken to a hospital, where he died.

No officers were injured in the shooting, Aurora police said. Police said the initial call came in at 2 p.m.

Aurora police spokeswoman Sydney Edwards told The Denver Post Thursday that the man who was shot was ordered several times by police to put down his weapon. When he didn’t, he was shot, she said. No additional details about the shooting were immediately available.

The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is on scene conducting its preliminary investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Aurora Police Department will run a parallel probe into the shooting.
