Bears’ new coordinators explain plans Thursday

The Bears’ coordinators laid out their plans after a week of change at Hall Hall.

Eric Washington has been the Bears’ defensive coordinator all season long but was promoted to play-caller on Friday when the team fired head coach Matt Eberflus. Washington, who last called plays for the Panthers in 2018, said the Bears will be themselves — albeit with a few tweaks,.

“The No. 1 reason people fail,” he said, “is because they don’t know who they are.”

Receivers coach Chris Beatty, who coached with interim head coach Thomas Brown at Wisconsin 10 years ago, was promoted to interim offensive coordinator. Brown will call the plays on game day, though, while Beatty will help run the meetings. Brown’s view on game day will be different; he’s used to calling plays for the coaching box but will move downstairs to face the 49ers.

Also Thursday, receiver Keenan Allen returned to practice after missing Wednesday with an ankle injury. the Bears nominated nose tackle Andrew Billings for Walter Payton Man of the Year. Each year the NFL chooses from among each team’s nominees to pick their most charitable player.
