Fallen CPD Officer Luis Huesca honored by Chicago Police Memorial Foundation
CHICAGO — Months after he was fatally shot, Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca continues to inspire his fellow officers.
On Wednesday, slain CPD Officer Luis Huesca was honored with the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s Valor Award. The foundation’s highest honor.
Back in April Huesca was fatally shot in Gage Park while returning home from work, still wearing his uniform.
CPD has classified his death as “in the line of duty.”
The man charged with his murder, 22-year-old Xavier Tate is behind bars facing charges of aggravated vehicular highjacking and possession of a stolen firearm.
“Everybody says he was a good colleague and I think that that’s an important thing too is that we let the families that know we are there for their support,” Phillip Cline, the Director of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, said.
Cline said the arresting officers in the case will also be honored.
“They also appreciate that they get to see who the officers are that made the arrest and took the offender into custody,” Cline said.
Huesca’s Loved ones said they hope his legacy of service continues to inspire.
“Like my mother said, we hope that recognition of, not only my brother, but also of other officers that are out there day in and day, gives other people, like inspires others to also follow in those steps,” Officer Huesca’s sister, Lily O’Brien said.
Four other CPD officers who were seriously injured in the line of duty and continue to serve were also honored on Wednesday night with Valor Awards.
