Family of victim killed in Fourth of July shooting gets special Christmas surprise
CHICAGO — Thanks to a local philanthropist, Christmas came a little early for a young boy and his grandmother who is raising him after a tragic loss.
Bringing joy to 7-year-old Jacoby and his grandmother Markita Scott this Christmas was top of mind for philanthropist Early Walker, who organized a shopping spree at the Walmart in Pullman.
Jacoby got the chance to fill up a cart with all sorts of games and toys that were on his wish list.
“I just want to say I’m overwhelmed a little and I appreciate this because it has been really hard for us,” Scott said.
Scott is now raising Jacoby after the young boy’s mom 24-year-old Caprice Edwards was killed in a shooting in the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue on the Fourth of July. Jacoby was also critically injured in the shooting.
“This is hard. This my first holiday without my daughter and it is not easy,” Scott said.
According to Early, he wanted the family to know they were not forgotten.
“We’re here with you today. And we want you to know still thinking about you, we want you to know we are still concerned about you guys and we want you to know we care about you guys,” Walker said.
Jacoby was not the only one who got a special gift on Thursday, Walker also presented Scott, who has been without a car, with a new white Acura SUV.
“I don’t even know what to say thank you,” Scott said.
Although Caprice is no longer with her family, Markita said she knows her daughter is looking down on them.
