'Fight to beat this': Ryne Sandberg shares his cancer relapsed, spread
CHICAGO — Iconic Chicago Cub and Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg shared Tuesday morning that his prostate cancer has relapsed and spread.
Sandberg shared the following message on social media.
“To my Chicago Cubs, National Baseball Hall of Fame, the city of Chicago and all my loyal fans, I want to share an update on my prostate cancer. Unfortunately, we recently learned the cancer has relapsed and it spread to other organs. This means that I’m back for more intensive treatment. We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family,” he wrote on Instagram.
Sandberg announced his battle in January and completed treatment in August by “ringing the bell.”
During his initial fight, he connected with WGN’s Mike Lowe as the two received cancer treatments at the same hospital.
Sandberg, elected to the Hall of Fame in 2005, had his statue unveiled at Wrigley Field in June.
