GST Council Levies 5% Tax On Normal Popcorn And 18% On Caramelized Ones; Internet Bursts In Memes

In the 55th GST Council led by FM Nirmala Sitharaman, held on December 21 in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, the GOI has decided to keep levying higher taxes on popcorns that are caramelized versus the normal ones. The council issued a clarification that normal popcorn will attract 5% GST, while pre-packaged and ready-to-eat labelled snacks will garner a 12% tax. Whereas caramelized popcorns will be levied with 18% GST. Per the Finance Minister, the pre-packaged ready-to-eat popcorn is mixed with salts and spices and hence categorized under ‘namkeen’ thereby attracting the 5% and 12% taxation. Meanwhile, the caramelized popcorns are mixed with sugar, which thereby changes the characterization. Per the government, it becomes a sugar confectionary post caramelization; hence the 18% GST. Does that make sense?

One netizen remarked, “India here acting like their whole economy depends on salted or caramelized popcorn.” Another wrote, “Pani puri khatta 5% GST. Pani puri meetha 18% GST.” Yet another jibed, “Chennai sambar is namkeen, hence 5% GST. Bengaluru sambar is sweet, hence 18% GST.” Hope the FM doesn’t tax memes in the future. Or this account will be gone for good.
