LISTED: Weekend events in North East cancelled due to icy and wintry weather
Organisers of the events have cancelled them, which were scheduled over the weekend.
Some tourist attractions have also announced they are closed.
A weather warning for ice is currently in place from the Met Office but ends at 10am, but temperatures are still expected to plummet below freezing over the weekend.
Ice and frost are going to be a permanent fixture in the region over Saturday and Sunday.
We have rounded up all of the events that have been cancelled so far and will update it throughout the day and into the weekend.
Weekend events cancelled in North East
Darlington parkrun
The weekly parkrun has announced it won’t be going ahead on Saturday. In a statement, organisers said: “Unfortunately most of the paths in the park are too icy/slippy and are not likely to improve. Fingers crossed to see everyone on the 18th.”
Hamsterley Winter Trail Races
The running event has said that it has had to postpone the running event until later this month.
An update on its social media page read: “Sadly we’ve had to postpone Hamsterley Winter Trail races until January 25. The forest is just not going to be ready following the heavy snowfall and freezing conditions. Hopefully, you can join us for the new date. If you’re a registered participant then please check your emails for further info and what to do next.”
Beamish Museum
Beamish is closed on Friday – and it’s not yet known about weekend opening.
A statement from the Museum reads: “Due to icy conditions in our car park, we will be closed on Friday (January 10). If you were due to come to our Home Educators’ Day, we will be sending you an email very soon. We thank you for your support and understanding.”
Jesmond Dene Parkrun
Another parkrun cancelled is Jesmond Dene – with organisers saying: “Unfortunately we will have to cancel due to weather conditions and the lack of safety for volunteers and participants.
“Conditions are not set to improve between now and Saturday morning with temperatures due to drop to -4° on Friday night.
“We wanted to give as much notice as possible. Here is the link for the list of parkrun cancellations, in case you want to check an alternative.”
