Man at centre of fire house murder probe died from stab wounds to neck
A MAN whose body was found in a burnt-out building died of stab wounds to the neck, an inquest has heard.
Joseph Johnston, 58, was discovered during the blaze at a flat in Annan.
An inquest into his death this week at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court in Cumbria found he suffered fatal blade injuries before he was recovered from the inferno.
Acting senior coroner for Cumbria, Kirsty Gomersal revealed evidence submitted by the Procurator Fiscal “provides a cause of death of stab wounds to the neck”.
She added: “There are ongoing criminal investigations and proceedings in Scotland.
“May I take this opportunity to pass to Mr Johnston’s family and friends my deepest condolences on his passing.”
Ms Gomersal outlined brief circumstances surrounding Mr Johnston’s death which were, she said, “well publicised”.
He had been discovered at an address in the Dumfries and Galloway town on November 19.
“Mr Johnston was repatriated to Cumbria for his funeral,” said Ms Gomersal as she explained why the inquest was being opened in the county.
Mr Johnston’s death had been registered in Scotland and a death certificate issued by the Scottish Registrar, the inquest heard.
“Therefore the coronial investigation and inquest relating to Mr Johnston’s death is now formally suspended pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings in Scotland,” concluded the coroner.
Detective Inspector Graeme Robertson, of Police Scotland, had said after the incident: “Our thoughts are with Joseph’s family and friends at this difficult time and everyone in the local community affected by his death.”
