‘Oh no’, cry punters as Glasgow coffee shop loved by ex-Rangers star closes
A POPULAR Glasgow coffee shop loved by an ex-Rangers star is to close one of its branches permanently.
The owner of Andina Colombian Coffee says it has become “basically impossible” to continue with her Finnieston venue.
Maria Varela has announced it is time to pull down the shutters on the west end cafe, while the original branch on Duke Street, Dennistoun, will remain open.
She wrote on social media: “With a heavy heart it’s time to call it a day.
“We tried our hardest to make things work but with costs rising so much it’s basically impossible to run a business like Andina.
“I am happy to say that I tried my best but unfortunately things do not always work out.
“Finnieston, thank you so much for receiving us, loving our coffee and keeping us going for two years.
“We will focus our attention on wholesale and should you be interested please let us know.
“Lots of Love, Maria.”
In a plea to regulars, she later added: “Thank you all for all the lovely messages and comments. It’s so nice to read how much some of you liked our shop and will miss our Andina Finnieston.
“Now it’s time for me to ask a favour and help me keeping Dennistoun afloat.
“We have been there almost five years and although we are not as busy as we were at some point, we still want to try and keep this shop open.”
Andina was previously visited by ex-Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, who popped by the Finnieston venue for its launch event in August 2022.
He also gave the original Duke Street cafe his seal of approval and even posed for a photo with staff.
The business said previously: “What a nice surprise to have Alfredo Morelos in our Andina Colombian Coffee Shop.
“He has given us his seal of approval with our Colombian coffee and food.
“He is such a great and genuine person and we are just happy to have someone from Colombia that enjoy this ‘Little Colombia’ in Dennistoun.”
Gutted customers flocked to the comments to react to the disappointing news of its closure.
One wrote: “Sorry to hear this, loved your coffee and friendly service.”
Another said: “Oh no. We don’t travel to Glasgow very often, but have always stopped by for a delicious Andina Colombian Coffee and gorgeous cake. Best of luck with future ventures.”

A third added: “Oh no. I am sorry to hear that. I loved the peaceful friendly atmosphere in your coffee shop and lovely coffee. A treat too seeing your dogs.”
A fourth commented: “We were there the day you opened and popped in anytime we were in the west end, however as we live east of Glasgow, Dennistoun is closer. I just hope it survives.”
