Residents evacuated hours after inferno engulfs former North East cinema

Nearly 12 hours after emergency services rushed to York Road in Hartlepool following reports of a fire at the former Odeon Cinema, residents in neighbouring streets are being evacuated.

The Northern Echo understands that those living on Joicey Court, the street which back on to the cinema, is being evacuated by police.

Multiple fire crews were called to tackle the bright orange inferno last night as smoke plumes filled the air into the early hours of the morning.

As day broke, the extent of the damage sustained by the grade II listed building became visible including the roof and its foundations which have caved in during the blaze.

Two fire crews remain at the scene this morning and the roads around it – but the cause of the fire has not yet been revealed.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade statement reads: “We are currently (06/10/24, 08:30) dealing with a protracted incident involving a building fire (former Odeon Cinema) at York Road, Hartlepool.
