San Diego airport screens millions of travelers for Thanksgiving amid delays
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — An estimated 2.9 million people were expected to be screened at the San Diego International Airport this Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
As people in the northeast dug out of feet of snow, San Diegans returned home and some managed to not experience any issues at all with air travel.
“Smooth as can be,” said Britney Sandoval.
Sandoval was traveling from Hawaii and said her flights there and back had no issues. “Head west for the holidays,” she said.
Meanwhile, other people got caught in long delays leaving San Diego.
“It was essentially a 12 hour delay for a one hour flight. It was the longest, short trip ever,” said Susan Clark.
Clark and her husband, Eric, flew to San Francisco on Wednesday to celebrate the holidays with family and encountered numerous delays with their Alaskan Airlines flight.
“There was a lot of fog, so flights didn’t get in. The flight couldn’t board and get out on time and just before taking off our pilots had to switch. So we had to wait longer for new pilots. We didn’t land until 1 in the morning and it should’ve been 9:30,” said Eric Clark.
Both were happy to land safely and ready to get home.
According to the website Flight Aware, 111 flights were delayed as of 8 p.m. Sunday that impacted San Diego passengers.
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, more than 300 flights were delayed, and on Thanksgiving the number was more than 150.
