The Italian maestra making waves at the Royal Opera House

If you go to the opera or indeed any classical music over the festive period there’s a very good chance it will be conducted by a man.

According to the Royal Philharmonic Society’s last count, just two British orchestras had a female principal conductor. That imbalance is about to change somewhat when Speranza Scappucci takes up the role of Principal Guest Conductor at the Royal Opera House later in 2025.
