Trial date set for man accused of murder

Jack Naylor, 22, was arrested after the death of 44-year-old Thomas Gomm after an incident on Irving Avenue, Boothstown, on Sunday, December 15.

Naylor has since been charged with Mr Gomm’s murder and a brief preliminary hearing before The Honorary Recorder of Manchester Judge Nicholas Dean KC heard a trial is due to take place.

Judge Dean said: “We have an estimated trial length of two weeks and a date will be set for a PTPH.”

The hearing took place at Manchester Crown Court (Image: Newsquest) Tyldesley man Mr Gomm was taken to hospital after the incident on Irving Avenue on Sunday, December 15 and later died of his injuries on Tuesday December 17.

Naylor, of Browning Avenue, Atherton, was not brought before the hearing at Manchester Crown Court.

As well as being charged with murder he has also been charged with assault by beating, racially aggravated harassment and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker. 

Naylor has yet to enter any pleas.

Judge Dean ruled that a plea and trial preparation hearing will be held on Friday, January 24 next year.

Prosecutor Rob Hall and Steven Swift, defending, both agreed to a series of stage dates before the expected trial takes place. 

A full trial is expected to begin on Monday, June 9 and is expected to last around two weeks.
